MAKING BASKETS

 

Summer of 2017,​ Bolgatanga (Ghana).

In Bolgatanga, basket weaving is a tradition that comes to life when the farming season is over. Local artisans buy the straw at the market, dye it by hand, and weave each basket with exceptional skill. Every traditional pattern is recreated with great accuracy, and each strand is carefully counted to ensure the baskets are perfectly round and beautifully crafted.

Every woman and girl takes part in the process, from the eldest women to the youngest children. Each has a task suited to her age and abilities.

As they weave, the conversation never stops.

A local organisation helps the artisans market and sell their baskets. The income they earn enables them to buy essential goods that they cannot produce themselves.

This collection consists of imprimaturas painted on 110 x 110 cm wooden pannels.
